Movies and music and their biggest stars fill the pages of StarStudio this
November!

It starts with the movies as we bring you Star Cinema’s “Fab Four”—Piolo
Pascual and Angel Locsin and the comic tandem of Vhong Navarro and Toni
Gonzaga. The four topbill two forthcoming Star Cinema productions: Land

In “Charmed Land”, Piolo and Angel talk about their experiences filming in

Representing the indie film scene is indie film sensation Coco Martin.
Coco, the crown prince of indie films, shares anecdotes and photographs

first trip abroad to his recent red carpet turn at the Cannes Film
Festival.

StarStudio also helps you get ready for the 2008 Cinema One Originals Film
Festival. This year, seven independently-produced films compete for the
acting awards and technical honors to be given out at the Cinema One
Originals 2008 Awards Ceremony on November 28 at ABS-CBN’s Dolphy Theater.

The music parade kicks off with a 12-page special celebrating the 13th
anniversary of Star Records. StarStudio joins the happy party by bringing
you the inside story on the company’s rise, interesting trivia (do you

The Wall Street Journal, the leading Asian business paper, in its April 26 to 27 issue reported that ABS-CBN is back on its top 10 list of the Most Admired Companies in the Philippines, taking the seventh slot ahead of PLDT, SM Prime Holdings, and Banco de Oro Universal.

ABS-CBN also ranked third in the Innovation Award category (for TFC Now) ahead of Banco de Oro, Ayala Land, Ayala Corp., PLDT, Universal Robina, BPI, and SM Prime.

ABS-CBN is the only media and content company that made it in both categories.

A total of 2,477 executives and professionals participated in the survey conducted last year by market research firm Colmar Brunton on behalf of The Wall Street Journal.

Judy Ann Santos goes all-out for Ploning

First-time film producers Judy Ann Santos and Panoramanila Pictures Co. are going all-out for their first project, the indie film Ploning. Aside from putting in their own money to finance the project, the producers are breaking a lot of new ground with the movie.

Ploning is also a movie of "firsts" for Judai herself. This is the first time she won't be having a leading man and it's her first attempt to shoot using live sound. She also had to learn Cuyonon, the local dialect in Cuyo, Palawan where the movie is set. "When we were learning Cuyonon, we had to understand what we were talking about because we needed to convey the right emotions of the characters. We had to learn the intonation, and how they (the locals) deliver the lines if they were to say the dialogues," Judai reveals. Ploning is 40% in Cuyonon , and 60% in Tagalog.

The role of Ploning is also unlike anything she has done before. The character is timid and quiet, very different from the loud and strong personas she's taken on before. "This is very far from the real Judy Ann," she says laughingly. "There was even a scene that I had to postpone shooting because I felt that I couldn't deliver it that day. It's the esposada (bridal shower) scene, which is the most important scene in Ploning. I had to study it for a day. But when I finished shooting all the sequences after three nights, I wanted to cry because I was able to deliver what the director wanted in one of the most difficult scenes in the movie."

Catch Ploning in theaters when it opens on April 30.

Boy Abunda goes Inside the Cinema

Did you know that a love scene with Maribel Lopez is one of Michael de Mesa’s most “traumatic” moments in his career? Did you know that Chanda Romero dropped her award onstage as a sign of protest? Did you know the late great Sammy Davis Jr. was a fan of Pilita Corrales? These little tidbits are just some of the things you’ll learn from Boy Abunda’s new show Inside the Cinema. Shown every second Tuesday of the month on Cinema One, the show is Boy’s own take on one of his favorite programs Inside the Actor’s Studio, which is hosted by James Lipton.
The first four episodes have already been shot in Cebu and Ilo-ilo and focuses on some of Cebu’s brightest talents like Chanda Romero and Pilita Corrales. Boy wants to interview showbiz veterans who have been in the business at least 20 years since they would have a wealth of stories to share. He also plans in interviewing people behind the camera like producers, writers, and directors who have also helped shaped the local entertainment industry.
Boy reveals that this is his dream project and that he “begged” ABS-CBN exec Charo Santos and Cinema One Channel Head Ronald Arguelles for a chance to do the show. He admits that it’s a work in progress though and they plan on focusing on more research and more audience participation.
As to fears about the subject matter not being tooo “masa” and popular, he believes that since its on cable there’s more leeway for true cineastes to enjoy the program. Anyone who loves Philippine showbiz should watch Inside the Cinema since its history will unfold before your very eyes as told by people who know it best.
Here are other bits of showbiz trivia we managed to pick up from Inside the Cinema:
• Joel Torre once worked as a Production Assistant on Bilibid Boys.
• Pilita was once a body double for Susan Roces.
• Pilita became famous in Australia after she was stranded while taking a cruise along the Australian Coast. There’s even a street named after her in the Land Down Under.
• Chanda Romero who only has a second year high school education surrounded herself with intellectuals and got “educated” that way instead.

Unexpected Gretchen Barretto

Members of the press were pleasantly surprised when Gretchen Barretto treated them to an impromptu concert during the launch of her album Unexpected. It turns out that Greta has a nice singing voice.
The always outspoken star was a bit late since she came from a guesting from Wowowee to promote her album and from DZMM where she fielded questions from Cristy Fermin and Jobert Sucaldito on the latest controversy surrounding her. Plus, the lovely La Greta had not yet eaten so she grabbed lunch first before facing the media. After a quick meal, she was more than ready to serenade the members of the press that were eagerly waiting for her arrival.
Gretchen revealed that the album came about as she waited for partner Tonyboy Cojuangco to give her the okay to do a movie. She had initially thought of just giving away copies of the CD to friends but later on she worked with Star Records instead.
While she just did the album for fun, Greta will no doubt be pleased that sales are reportedly brisk. After the press con, Gretchen reportedly met with Nadia Montenegro to iron out their problems. Unfortunately, things were left unresolved and the two former Regal babies have yet to kiss and make up.

The Original Palos

It was a thrill for the cast and the members of the press when the original Palos himself, Mr. Bernard Bonnin graced the One Gr8 Jan. 28 in 08 press conference held at Studio 1 of ABS-CBN. The veteran star who now walks with the aid of a cane wore a beret, the signature style of the character he originated around 45 years ago.
Mr. Bonnin says of the latest incarnation of Palos that its very different from what he did before, with the stunts and scenes being performed on a grander scale and budget. Since parts of the series were shot in Macau and will be shot in other countries, the show definitely has a different look and feel. But the changes are all good for Mr. Bonnin who is thrilled that new generations of audiences will discover Palos.

Regine Velasquez On MMK

Regine Velasquez makes a return engagement to Maalaala Mo Kaya. During a presscon on the follow up episode to KC Concepcion’s TV debut, Asia’s Songbird was excited about her second outing on the drama anthology. After all, her debut on MMK earned her a Best Actress trophy from Star Awards two years ago when she co-starred with Piolo Pascual in an episode coincidentally entitled Lobo.
The singer looked composed and lovely even as the press questioned her on her reported channel change (she has since renewed her contract with her mother network) and about significant other Ogie Alcasid.

Palos

The title (which refers to the elusive eel) first gained renown in 1961 as a komiks novel that was made into a movie starring Bernard Bonnin, father of Charlene Gonzalez. Mr. Bonnin appears in the 2008 sineserye as Vittorio, the original head of the government-affiliated Neptune investigative bureau.
This time, the conflict revolves Giancarlo (Jake), a young agent who's the best in his batch of trainees at Neptune. Giancarlo's colleagues end up calling him Palos, a moniker that he resents because he has a hunch that the original Palos a.k.a. Fabio (Cesar) has something to do with his mother's death. Fabio also does crime-fighting on his own. Fabio and Giancarlo's paths cross and this encounter leads to revelations about the death of Giancarlo's mother and the identity of his father.
The look of Palos is different from other teleseryes; it's contemporary with a '60s feel. Gadgets also play a part of the design and story. Both Giancarlo and Fabio use high-tech weapons to track down and fight enemies.
Cesar and Jake had months of martial arts sessions with a personal trainer to prepare for their new roles. They also had several target shooting practice sessions. A treat for the viewers is the diverse type of action that the two stars will do. According to director Toto Natividad, Cesar will specialize in street-fighting, while Jake will do stunts with wushu and Parkour moves. Parkour is an art or discipline wherein one makes use of a combination of movements like leaping, jumping, climbing or running to overcome obstacles. It comes from the French term parcours du combattant, the obstacle course method of military training. Expect Jake to leap over walls and jump from high places.
Palos airs weekdays after Lobo.

71 Dreams Foundation Plans for 2008

Two years after the Ultra tragedy, the 71 Dreams Foundation continues to help families fulfil their dreams with their different programs. To date, 53 families have been given livelihood assistance while 98 students are enjoying scholarships. Other projects, such as ones focusing on social development, have also been implemented.
For 2008, 71 Dreams Foundation has plans to expand its aid and programs. In March, the foundation will launch Enhancement and Reaffirmation of Paternal Abilities or ERPAT. The program aims to help widowers enhance their parenting skills and deal with the emotional needs of their children.

Martin Nievera is back in the local music scene with his first major concert in years. Martin Nievera XXV promises to be a homecoming of sorts of the original concert king. The concert to be held tonight 8 pm at the Araneta Coliseum also marks his 25th year in the biz. Expected to attend are the madman’s sons Robin and Ram. When asked if ex-wife Pops Fernandez was a guest at the concert during the press con, Martin wisely remained non-committal, saying that he and Pops were meeting that night upon her request to work things out. (They’ve patched things up and appeared together on ASAP since then.)
Louie Ocampo is back as Martin’s Musical Director while Rowell Santiago is Stage Director. Gerard Salonga conducts the FILharmoniKa.

Del Monte Fiber-Enriched Pineapple Juice and StarStudio treated some celebrities today to an afternoon of indulgence with a spa party at Neo Day Spa at The Fort. Del Monte Fiber-Enriched Pineapple Juice endorser Lucy Torres-Gomez got the ball rolling by welcoming guests and celebrities like Dimples Romana, Geoff Eigenmann, Carla Humphries, AJ Dee, and Dominic Ochoa to the event.
MetroActive Editor in Chief Jeena Lopez gave a talk on the benefits of detoxifying mentally, emotionally, and physically. Later on, guests indulged in spa treatments and plenty of Del Monte Fiber-Enriched Pineapple Juice.

PS. We were pleased as punch when Vanessa Chong and Rovilson Fernandez of The Amazing Race Asia 2 (aired on AXN) dropped by the event as well. And as hard as we tried to have them reveal the race winner—and the real status of their relationship—the two wisely remained mum on the both subject matters. But they did leave the event together though. Interesting.

A romance between the two has reportedly been going around for more than three months now, something that has high society abuzz with news. A source claims that it’s only a matter of time for her to break her silence.

While her relationship with the moneyed businessman has weathered that controversy among others, it’s no secret that the guy’s clan (his mom, in particular), have already disapproved of his dalliance with the outspoken lady. They’re now even more opposed to the relationship.

ABS-CBN launched its opening salvo of new shows for 2008 with a grand press conference last Friday, January 25, featuring some of the network’s hottest stars.

First up was Kung Fu Kids, an anime-inspired series for kids and kids at heart. Jairus Aquino stars as Lembot, a sickly kid picked upon by neighborhood bullies and the target of his father’s (played by Wowie de Guzman) anger because of his weakness. He seeks the help of a rundown Kung Fu master to help him fight the bullies and protect his loved ones.

Next up was Lobo, the much-awaited TV team-up of Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin. The two play star-crossed lovers who are in the middle of a conflict not of their own making. As to whether or not they live happily ever after, viewers have to tune in to ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida slot to find out.

Jake Cuenca is a man with a mission as he goes after the man who killed his father in Palos. Also playing the iconic Pinoy superhero is Cesar Montano. The two stars entered Studio 1 of ABS-CBN where the press conference was being held with a grand fight sequence that had unsuspecting audience members shrieking in surprise.

Perla is now an ordinary housewife after retiring from the superhero biz years ago to raise her family. Her husband Mark (Jayson Gainza) and kids Salty and Pepper (Dino Imperial and Mariel Pamintuan) keep her busy nowadays. When a family of villains moves in next door and she discovers that her kids have inherited super powers, Perla's life as an ordinary housewife comes to an end when she has to save the world again.

Meet some of the cuties of Star Magic's Abt Ur Luv—AJ Perez, Angelo Patrimonio, Chris Gutierrez and Enchong Dee. This teen-oriented show airs every Saturday, 5:00 pm right after Let’s Go! The series also stars Aaron Agassi, Aldred Gatchalian, Carla Humphries, Denise Laurel, Dino Imperial, Empress Schuck, Joaqui Mendoza, Lauren Young, Mikee Lee, Mikki Arceo, Rayver Cruz, Shaina Magdayao, Valeen Montenegro, Victor Basa and Zia Marquez.

Enchong plays Blue, the younger brother of Stick (Victor) who is a super chickboy and has no discipline. His brother went to Manila to escape his boring life so Stick is not too ecstatic when Blue turns his kuya’s life upside-down.

AJ is Josh, the twin brother of Hillary (Empress) who is “burara” and are exact opposites. Josh and his friends Webb (Angelo) and Rickson (Chris) are obsessed with Celine, the “vavavoom” martial arts expert (Denise). Webb is an overstaying high school student as he always flunks his Filipino subjects.

This Saturday’s episode is entitled “Wednesday Salpukan”. Bill (Dino) is intent on giving Hillary a dose of her own medicine by ignoring her too. Worse, Bill bribes Giselle (Zia) and Nelle (Lauren) to join him on a "treat" instead of going with Hillary. Hillary is in tears when Josh and his cohorts find her. Josh, Rickson, and Webb vow to find Bill and teach him a lesson. Meanwhile, Mao (Mikee) admits to Lieu (Aldred) that he also wants to court Gwen (Valeen). The two guys join Gwen in an orchid-hunt for her garden and they end up squabbling with each other. Gens (Rayver) finds Vince (Joaqui) and Neri (Shaina) together and the encounter ends up in a wrestling match. Vince resigns from the internet shop. Hillary asks Celine to teach her a mixed martial arts move and uses it on Bill. Bill’s Lola confronts the family and vows to file charges. But Bill opts for a more amicable settlement - that Hillary be his private nurse while he’s recuperating. Looks like it’s an action-packed Saturday in Star Magic Presents Abt Ur Luv! Don’t miss it!
